South America is well known for its breathtaking rainforests, its mighty Amazon river, its rich cultural heritage and … its skillful and mesmerizing footballers! That’s right, South American footballers like Pelé, Maradona or Messi are known all around the globe for their unique style of playing the beautiful game or jogo bonito. 🏆 WINNERS EVERYWHERE 🏆
In fact, did you know that all 20 football world championships since 1930 were won either by an EU or a Mercosur member state? Great matches between Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany and Italy are well remembered and the rivalries between European and South American teams run deep. On the pitch, only one team can ultimately triumph. But in trade everyone can be a winner! The EU-Mercosur trade agreement will make that happen.

LARGEST TRADING BLOCS
An agreement between the EU and Mercosur is also an agreement between the largest and fourth largest trading blocs in the world. Naturally, such a deal holds immense benefits for both sides. Mercosur is home to over 250 million people and the EU is Mercosur’s number one trading partner. One fifth of all the exports from Mercosur go to the EU and the EU exports lots of products to Mercosur as well. But EU exporters have to pay more than €4 billion (!) a year in tariffs. A trade deal with Mercosur could significantly lower or remove tariffs altogether, saving the money spent for tariffs and opening opportunities for investment.
